Understanding Conflict Resolution

Conflict arises from a discord of needs, drives, wishes, and/or demands. - Wm Glasser ATTENDING TO THE SOCIETAL EMOTIONAL INDIVIDUAL NEEDS FOR ONES OWN SENSE OF HAVING (1) POWER: (2)LOVE AND BELONGING; (3.) FREEDOM; (4) FUN; (5) SAFETY.

When a Government seizes drug money, where does it go? Where does it end up. The Gov might as well sell the drugs directly--helping to ease the violence associated with dope sells. What's the difference between the Gov seizing drug money and apportioning drug related property and drug dealers making a living on the drug monies industry? WHICH NEEDS ARE BEING MET AS CONFLICT EMMERGES?

After the agency lost track of hundreds of weapons, some later turned up in Mexico; two were found on the United States side of the border where an American Border Patrol agent had been shot to death.

Conflict in and of itself is not positive or negative.
Rather, it is the response toconflict that transforms it into either a competitive, destructive experience or a constructive challengeoffering the opportunity for growth. Since conflictis an inevitable part of life, learning how to respondto it constructively is essential. Constructive conflictresolution begins with developing an understandingof conflict and the principles of conflict resolution(see figure 1).

Almost every conflict involves an attempt by the
disputants to meet basic needs that, if not satisfied,
cause the conflict to persist, even when an agreement is reached about the subject of the dispute.

All individuals are motivated by needs. Dr. William Glasser identifies four basic psychological needs that
motivate behavior:
Belonging: Fulfilled by loving, sharing, and cooperating with others.PowerFulfilled by achieving, accomplishing, and being recognized and respected. Freedom: Fulfilled by making choices. FunFulfilled by laughing and playing.

In 2006, 14-year-old Martin Lee Anderson died following a violent restraint at the Bay County Boot Camp, a Panama City lockup for juvenile delinquents. The 30-minute restraint was captured on video, and fueled a nationwide scandal over the treatment of delinquent youth. Seven guards and a nurse were charged in the case; all were acquitted.
In July 2011, the final hours of 18-year-old Eric Perez were also captured on video. Records show Eric was dropped on his head by guards during “horse play,” and he died hours later when guards, supervisors and the Palm Beach County lockup superintendent refused to call 911 to get him medical care. One guard walked over Eric’s limp body as he lay dying in a cellblock, videos show.
The incident marks the third time in recent years that workers at a Florida juvenile justice lockup have been videotaped while abusing or neglecting a child in state custody.

Conflicts may occur, for example, when two individuals in a relationship have different ideas about how to belong or because one is more concerned with building
the relationship and the other with maintaining a sense
of freedom. When conflict arises, individuals have
essentially two choices: to continue the conflict or to

of almost all conflict.
Conflicts may arise over limited resources. Conflict
resolution principles suggest that when limited resources are at issue, individuals’ best interests lie in
cooperating, not competing. In cooperating, disputants share in the process of problem solving, recognize each other’s interests, and create choices. This
process usually provides satisfaction because the
psychological needs of belonging and power, and
perhaps even of freedom and fun, are addressed in
the fair allocation of limited resources.
Conflicts over limited resources may not be resolved
if basic needs are not addressed along with the resource issue.

Kicking Black Boys Out Of Class, Teaching Black Girls A Lesson
Black boys under the age of 12 are constantly being removed from class and even arrested for non-violent acts of defiance, all in plain view of their classmates. The Southern Poverty Law Center released a study in 2010 that revealed that in a national sample of more than 9,000 middle schools, 28.3 percent of black males, on average, were suspended at least once during a school year, nearly three times the 10 percent rate for white males. Black females were suspended more than four times as often as white females (18 percent vs. 4 percent).
